West Bloomfield High School E.A.R.T.H. Club Student Driven Solar Project

The mission of the West Bloomfield High School EARTH club is to promote environmental awareness in our community, and do our part to preserve the planet. E.A.R.T.H. stands for Environmentally Aware, Ready To Help. Since 1993, the EARTH club has involved many hundreds of students in actions to preserve the environment. The EARTH club educates students, staff and the community at large about how to live more sustainably through numerous projects, programs and volunteer efforts.

“Student Driven Solar” was a three-year project that I participated in which brought a

As co-president of the club, I  helped raise over $29,000! Under the guidance of former Michigan Science Teacher of the Year, Mr. Joshua Barclay, I was working along with the club on planning the installation of a solar array on the West Bloomfield High School campus in order to generate enough renewable energy to 100% FULLY SOLAR POWER all the classrooms in the WBHS science department and the activities that go on in them by 2020. We communicated with a local businessman to acquire this array and he has generously offered to partially donate the solar array system to the WBHS EARTH Club after months of negotiation. We have fundraised around the community to generate the remainder of the cost to construct this technological masterpiece.

One of my proudest achievement was presenting to the school board of the West Bloomfield Board of Education advocating for cleaner energy in the district. After over two years of hard work together with the EARTH Club, we were able to secure a 20kW Solar Array for the West Bloomfield High School with $0 up-front investment requests! With generous donations, endless fundraising, and grant scholarships we were able to raise $55k of funding and give the West Bloomfield School Board a break-even point is instant with the guarantee of reduced costs and carbon emissions from day one.

Since it was installed in September 2019, the solar array has generated over 40 MWh of energy and saved over 60,000 pounds of CO2 emissions! Check out the 20kW array live data feed for the most up to date numbers.

We have completed a successful installation of the solar array on October 11th, 2018! Track the progress on the EARTH Club website!
